Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Somalia and resident of Corvallis, Ore., has been arrested on charges of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction (explosives) in connection with a plot to detonate a vehicle bomb at an annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony earlier this evening in Portland, Ore., the Justice Department announced.

According to a criminal complaint signed in the District of Oregon, Mohamud was arrested by the FBI and Portland Police Bureau at approximately 5:40 p.m. (PST) Nov. 26, 2010 after he attempted to detonate what he believed to be an explosives-laden van that was parked near the tree lighting ceremony in Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square. The arrest was the culmination of a long-term undercover operation, during which Mohamud had been monitored closely for months as his alleged bomb plot developed. The device was in fact inert; and the public was never in danger from the device.

“The threat was very real. Our investigation shows that Mohamud was absolutely committed to carrying out an attack on a very grand scale,” said Arthur Balizan, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Oregon. “At the same time, I want to reassure the people of this community that, at every turn, we denied him the ability to actually carry out the attack.”

Imam Muhammad Najieb, director of the Muslim Community Center of Portland, wants to make one thing clear about the Northeast Portland project his organization is planning: it’s not a mosque.

Shauku abd’Hafidh Mlimaji, director of youth and community events, said he and Najieb were nervous going into their first meetings with the city of Portland to discuss construction of a new community center at North Vancouver Avenue and Killingsworth Street.

“The fear was that people would hear about our project and factor in negative stereotypes of Islam or call it fundamentalism,” Mlimaji said. “But those fears were quickly dismissed. City staff kept calling it a mosque, and once we clarified that this is a community center, we saw a cloud being lifted from their faces.”

“Mosques are for praying only,” Najieb said. “Our former leader has said that we need to get away from the concept of our center being only a place for Muslims. This will be an Islamic-based place that’s open to everyone.”

Ex-Islamic charity wins ruling in wiretap case

A ruling in the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday clears the way for a case that could ultimately determine whether the Bush administration broke the law by wiretapping the attorneys of an Oregon chapter of an Islamic charity.

The Justice Department had asked for a stay in the case, arguing that national security would be compromised if a lawsuit brought by Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation, a defunct charity that once operated in Ashland, was allowed to proceed.

The suit is the only one of its kind to have qualified for the standing needed to challenge the government's warrantless wiretapping program.

The Obama administration has continued to cite the so-called state secrets privilege as its defense, following the tactics of the Bush administration.

On Friday, a federal appeals court in San Francisco rejected the Justice Department's request for an emergency stay. The Justice Department had asked to delay court hearings after it appeared Al-Haramain lawyers would finally be granted access to a document that showed the government had illegally tapped phone calls between the director of the charity and his lawyers.

Court watchers are waiting to see if the Obama administration appeals the case to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Charles Miller, a spokesman for the civil division of the U.S. Department of Justice, said Friday that the office would not comment on the ruling.

The case began in 2006 after the Bush administration "inadvertently disclosed a document" to Al-Haramain attorneys and several others affiliated with the case, said Steven Goldberg, a Portland-based lawyer for the defunct charity.

Goldberg said that he is prohibited from talking about the specifics of the document but that "we believe it was evidence of the fact that our people [Muslims] were subjected to unlawful surveillance."

After the mistake was discovered, the document was returned to the government, which placed it under lock and key, arguing that it was a state secret that could threaten national security if disclosed. Goldberg and other lawyers for Al-Haramain, however, argued that they needed it to prove the wiretapping.

A number of organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union, have attempted to sue the government over similar circumstances but were denied standing because they "couldn't prove that their rights had been violated," Goldberg said.

"That left our case as the only one that could prove our clients were subject to this program," he said. "But the only way we could prove that was through this document that we no longer had access to."

Al-Haramain has been locked in an ongoing, multi-track legal battle with the federal government since the U.S. Treasury Department declared the Saudi-based group a terrorist organization in 2004.

The Saudi government forced the group to disband, but the Bush administration re-designated it in 2008, saying it was still attempting to operate.

The 9th Circuit eventually agreed that the disputed document was protected as a state secret. But the court ruled that Al-Haramain could try to find another way to show it had standing to sue the government over domestic wiretapping, including using their "recollections" of the document.

"We then made a preliminary showing that we were subject to surveillance," Goldberg said, adding that U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker, the chief judge for the District of Northern California, "said 'there sure looks like there's meat on them bones.'"

In January, Walker ordered the government to process the applications for Goldberg and two of his fellow attorneys to apply for the top security clearance needed to access the document. On Feb. 12, Goldberg and one other attorney received notification that their applications were "favorably adjudicated."

The government sought the stay this week to prevent the attorneys from finally getting access to the document.

Goldberg said he and his fellow attorneys were disappointed that the new [Obama] administration had chosen to fight the case. "We're not seeing any difference between the two administrations," he said. Goldberg expressed relief over Friday's ruling. "Finally, after three years, we are supposed to proceed to the merits of this case," he said. "Ultimately, we're trying to determine whether the Bush administration broke the law. We're finally entering a stage of this case where we're going to get to that question."

Surely you've been as upset as I have by Jimmy Carter's recent book-length diatribe against Israel, "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid." Carter reveals his bias starting with the title itself. He places the onus for Palestinian statehood square on the shoulders of Israel and implies that Israel is committing racism similar to that practiced in South Africa. Carter's book could and more accurately should have been titled, "Palestine: Statehood Not Terrorism."

While the book has received very few favorable reviews, and the Democratic Party has stated that Carter does not speak for it on the subject of Israel, we should note that the website of the Muslim Brotherhood (parent organization of the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas) has praised it.

Even Kenneth Stein, a professor of history at Emory University, who has been associated with Jimmy Carter's Carter Center from its founding (he was its first executive director and co-wrote Carter's first book on the Middle East) resigned last week, saying he was "ashamed" that Carter would put his name to a book "based on unvarnished analyses, factual errors, . . . superficialities, glaring omissions and simply invented segments." Stein also charges Carter with plagiarism, maintaining that his book is "replete with copied materials not cited."

Mitchell Bard, a pro-Israel author, reviewed the book and notes that Carter ultimately admits that his inflammatory title is specious and misleading. "Curiously, enough," Bard writes, "if you read through almost the entire book, which persistently accuses Israel of apartheid acts, you arrive at page 189, where he specifically contradicts the entire thesis by stating, 'The driving purpose for the forced separation of the two peoples is unlike that in South Africa."

Yes, Jimmy, in South Africa, the ruling majority kept the black minority separate and oppressed to exploit them economically. On the other hand, Israel's Arab citizens have full civil rights and enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the Middle East; Israel fortifies its borders from outsiders only to prevent Arab terrorists from coming in to kill its people. Big difference.

Finally, we are reminded of the anecdote related by Andrew and Leslie Cockburn in their book, "Dangerous Liaison: The Inside Story of the U.S.-Israeli Covert Relationship," about how Jimmy Carter, discussing his fading re-election prospects and his sinking approval rating in the Jewish community, snapped, "If I get back in, I'm going to [expletive] the Jews."

Is Carter evil or just crazy? That's probably not the right question. His book is clearly biased, his premise is false, and his "facts" are often false. Intellectual Indoctrination and Academic Fraud at Temple University

When the Select Committee on Academic Freedom was created by the Pennsylvania Legislature in 2005, the legislators observed, “Academic freedom is likely to thrive in an environment of intellectual diversity….” Temple University, which is one of the three major public institutions of higher learning in the state, does not include a declaration like this among its academic policies and its academic programs regularly violate the principle.

For instance, Temple provides a “writing-intensive two course sequence” called “Intellectual Heritage” which is required of all Temple students and which includes a focus on Enlightenment, Romantic and Revolutionary Thinkers. The Revolutionary Thinkers include Darwin, Marx and Freud, but not Adam Smith whose revolutionary ideas underpin the society in which Temple students live. Professors involved in the course post guides for students on a department webpage called “Faculty Perspectives on Marx." Most of the faculty guides provided, however, are explications of Marx’s writings without critical comment. In all, there are about 30 sample exam and study questions provided which relate to Marx. Every one, without exception, prompts students to explain what Marx said in the way you would expect students to explain the theories of Isaac Newton, whose hypotheses were confirmed by real world experiments. Since all Marxist experiments have failed one might expect some mention of this fact. But one would be disappointed if one did.

Islam is being taught in the nation's public schools as a religion to be embraced because "organized Islamists have gained control of textbook content," according to an organization that analyzes textbooks.

The American Textbook Council has concluded that the situation is the consequence of "the interplay of determined Islamic political activists, textbook editors, and multiculturally minded social studies curriculum planners."

It has gone so far that correcting the situation now becomes a problem, because "educational publishers and educational organizations have bought into claims propounded by Islamists – and have themselves become agents of misinformation."

That comes from Gilbert T. Sewall, who not only wrote the organization's report on Islam and textbooks, but also generated a response to the flood of criticism he encountered.

Catholic publishing house under fire for new Islamic text deal

MADRID, October 20 (CNA) - The Spanish daily La Razon is denouncing a Catholic publishing company that has agreed to publish text books for Islamic religion classes that will be offered in public schools in Spain.

The Santa Maria Foundation, which is operated by the Marianist religious order, has assumed the project of publishing Islamic text books through its publishing group “SM,” with the support of the Union of Islamic Communities of Spain (UCIDE – Spanish abbreviation). The first textbook, which has been released to reporters, is called, “Discovering Islam.”

SM, says the purpose of their decision to publish Muslim texts “is to foster intercultural encounter and religious dialogue, with the integration of Islamic values in the socio-cultural context of Spain,” La Razon, however, argues the deal is really about getting Muslim business.

According to the Spanish newspaper, the UCIDE will sell the books at the same price as books on the Catholic religion published by the Marianists. The first printing of the books should thus bring over $275,000 in revenue. SM says the profits will be used to finance future editions, and if the UCIDE is able to sell 15,000 copies each of all seven volumes of the series, it will earn some $1.5 million in profits.

According to reporter Alex Navajas of La Razon, “In countries like Saudi Arabia or the Sudan, if you are caught with a Bible, you are sentenced to death…Surely the Islamists in Spain are not as fanatical as the Saudis or the Sudanese. But that’s not what this is about. The problem is that SM, whose ‘identity is inspired by Christian values’,” has fallen prey to “the most severe form of relativism and syncretism.” [the amalgamation of different religions]

“That is, there is no difference between promoting the Christian faith or the Islamic faith because, in the end, all religious are equal since all of them lead to God. So, let them publish the Book of Mormon, which is just nonsense, or come to an agreement with the Jehovah’s Witnesses, who own one of the most powerful publishing companies in the world,” Navajas said.

Some sobering lessons from Muslim taxi drivers

Understandably, those troubled by the contemporary Muslim world point to the amount of gratuitous violence emanating from it and the apparent absence of Muslim anger against it.

In response, Muslim defenders of their faith -- and Western defenders such as Karen Armstrong and John Esposito -- inform us that the terror, suicide and cruelty that emanate from a portion of the Muslim world are all aberrations. We are assured that the average Muslim is as appalled as all other decent people are by Muslims who torture, decapitate and blow up innocent people.

And in Minneapolis, Minn., Muslim taxi drivers, who make up a significant percentage of taxi drivers in that city, refuse to pick up passengers who have a bottle of wine or other alcoholic beverage with them.

This is significant. We are not talking here about Muslim fanatics or Muslim terrorists, but about decent every day Muslims. And what these practices reveal is something virtually unknown in Judeo-Christian societies -- the imposing of one's religious practices on others.

College professor: 'Hatred is not part of Islam'
A multicultural-laden discussion omits dark side of Islam

OCTOBER 12, 2006 (Portland, Ore) – In light of the recent disturbing reports that American children are being force-fed propaganda about Islam by diversity-driven school boards in our public schools, it comes as no surprise that a college professor continues the tradition.

On the same day that an Orthodox priest was beheaded in Iraq for the Pope's speech in Regensburg, Germany, a professor denied that hatred is part of Islam. "It depends on who you talk to," he said.

Professor Will Deming made his comments to an audience of adults at a Catholic Church in a suburb outside of Portland. Deming, a professor of comparative religions at University of Portland, a four-year Catholic college, has written a college textbook titled, Rethinking Religion: A Concise Introduction (Oxford Univ. Press 2004).

Deming is relatively unknown in the field of Middle East studies. According to the director of Campus Watch, Deming doesn’t appear to be a Middle East specialist, “except in the sense of studying the New Testament. He’s not a member of the Middle East Studies Association.”

Hard Question, Soft Answer

Titled, “What you should know about Islam,” the talk was open to the public and attended by at least 40 people, all Catholics.

Prof. Deming, a Presbyterian, was asked at the beginning of the discussion from the audience, "Is hatred a part of Islam?"

"Hatred is not part of Islam," he replied, adding, “It depends on who you talk to.”

The ad for the Deming’s talk which appeared in the Archdiocesan newspaper The Catholic Sentinel read he “has studied Islam and the engagement of different religions” and that his book “dispels all manner of misunderstanding, which seem to follow the subject.”

The only misunderstanding appears to be on Deming’s part. He wants us to believe that he doesn’t understand the connection between hatred and Islam.

Academic Speak

Throughout his talk on Islamic beliefs, Deming had the habit of stating these beliefs as his own. This is because he did not preface his statements with a qualifier such as, for example, “Muslims believe that” or “a belief in Islam is.” This omission of a qualifier had the effect of confounding his audience of adults; one can only imagine that his students are unprepared for determining whether or not his comments from his talk, including the following, are declarations of fact:

Jerusalem was originally Islamic.

Israel stole their land (from the Palestinians).

The West is an intruder.

Jerusalem is the 3rd holiest city in the Islamic world.

In deference to Muslims, Deming repeated the phrase, “Jerusalem was originally Islamic” at least three times during his talk.

This is a misleading and incomplete picture of Jerusalem. The Jews were in Jerusalem 3,000 years ago, placing the Jews in the Old City well over 1,500 years before Mohammed. Jews have been living in Jerusalem for nearly three millennia, except for periods of their explicit exclusion, after the second Jewish revolt against Rome in 135 C.E. until 438 C.E.--The American Jewish Committee.

When asked about these facts, Deming was dismissive, saying, I’m giving you the Muslim view of the conflict.

In comparing the Catholic hierarchy to Islamic scholars, Professor Deming probably is unaware of how derogatory in tone the following remark is toward the Catholic Church when he said,

The law of Islam is more democratic than the Catholic hierarchy because the interpretations of the Koran are made by consensus of Islamic scholars.

Frequently, Deming mentioned the spread of Islam and pointed to Turkey, Arabia, Syria, and other portions on the map. Not once did he say how Islam was spread.

Unsuspecting College students: be wary

Most Americans, including college students, are unfamiliar with dhimmi and Sharia law, and how this law threatens the democracies of Europe and potentially our democracy. Deming takes advantage of this widespread lack of knowledge when he says:

Dhimmis are granted special privileges because they are people of the book. They are allowed to live in Muslim countries by paying a tax.

This wording denies intolerance written into Islamic law for, according to Dhimmi Watch:

Dhimmis, “protected people,” are free to practice their religion in a Sharia regime, but are made subject to a number of humiliating regulations designed to enforce the Qur’an’s command that they “feel themselves subdued” (Sura 9:29). This denial of equality of rights and dignity remains part of the Sharia, and, as such, are part of the legal superstructure that global jihadists are laboring to restore everywhere in the Islamic world, and wish ultimately to impose on the entire human race.

Deming must be among those types of academics whom Robert Spencer warns us about in his book, Onward Muslim Soldiers (2003). As Spencer points out, ". . . for many American scholars of Islam, spiritual jihad is the only meaning of jihad that has any legitimacy. Karen Armstrong, a noted American apologist for Islam, warns us, 'The primary meaning of the word jihad is not holy war but struggle.'”

This side step is standard “academic speak” these days. It’s one of the reasons why jihad expert Robert Spencer started Dhimmi Watch: to bring public attention to the academic and journalistic whitewashes of dhimmitude given to radical jihadist enemies of human rights for all.

Catholics and Jews, the target of radical Muslim terrorists, cannot afford to be uninformed. Secondly, they cannot be misinformed because it is suicidal to our democracy.

More questionable statements

A question came from the audience: “What would happen if the Shiites and the Sunnis joined together?”

Deming joked, with a shrug, “What would happen if Protestants and Catholics got together?”

Do you recognize what he’s doing here? It’s moral equivalency. He is saying that Protestants and Catholics once threatened the world in the same manner.

The United States is Doomed?

He ended is talk by pointing out the spread of Islam from the Middle East to other parts of the world. He played up the political power of Islam and Muslims, and that the United States is only 6% of the world’s population. As he said this, he pointed at a large map displayed on the overhead projector which depicted the Middle East at the center of the world. This suggests that the days are numbered for the United States as a world power – historically speaking.

We in the United States think that we’ve set the standard for the world when the rest of the world doesn’t agree.

Is Professor Deming unaware of how patently false this premise of his is? It sounds like he’s totally absorbed the liturgy of Hate America cult leaders George Soros and Noam Chomsky.

Give Equal Time

Deming’s Muslim-centered approach to the Arab-Israeli conflict is troubling. In fairness, equal time is needed from Jewish and Catholic Scholars following any talks such as this one.

Oregon parent takes exception to educational unit on Islam

One Nyssa parent said she is upset about the amount of time and detail the school district has allocated for an educational unit on Islam in her son's seventh-grade social studies class.
Kendlee Garner said her son studied world geography for one week and then the class launched the Islam unit that has already spanned four weeks.

She said that isn't right.

“I bet if you took a world map into the middle school, not one kid could plot Iraq, but now they can all put on a Muslim headdress,” Garner said.

The class has spent far too much time studying Islam, she said.

“When they only spent a week on geography, I figured if they were only going to spend a week on Islam it wouldn't be so bad,” Garner said. “But it has just dragged on and on.”
The unit has involved guest speakers, skits and reports, but an activity on Thursday where students in all three social studies classes dressed in traditional Islamic outfits upset Garner because of the religious nature and the lack of parental notification.

She said she did not want her children putting on garb from other religions, and when she complained, her son was given an alternative assignment and sent to the library.
“The only reason I knew about it was because my son told me about it,” she said. “They sent him to the library instead of stopping what they were doing. I'm sure people would be outraged if they dressed up as the Pope.”

Nyssa School District Superintendent Don Grotting said as part of Benchmark 3 of the state standards, the school has taught similar units in the past.

“I've been here six years,” Grotting said. “This is the only person who has ever voiced, to me, a complaint about it.”

Garner did contact Grotting and NMS school officials with her concerns before contacting the Argus Observer.

“She feels very strongly about her beliefs, and I can respect that,” Grotting said of Garner. “But we can never satisfy 100 percent of people.”

Benchmark 3 of the Oregon Department of Education's Oregon Standards 2006 to 2007 School Year Newspaper does include this line: “SS.08.HS.05.03 Understand the importance of the rise of Islam and its interaction with Europe,” as the fourth unit under World History, “Understand and interpret events, issues, and developments within and across eras of world history.”

The newspaper is a document that outlines standards, guidelines and assessments for the Oregon Department of Education.

The Benchmark 3 standards - topics which a student should understand before the completion of eighth-grade - cover world history from Mesopotamia to the Renaissance. At Nyssa Middle School, topics are broken down by grade level and time period, with sixth-grade covering history through the Roman Empire and seventh-grade continuing with the history of the Middle East and Islam. In eighth- grade, students study U.S. History.

“We start out with the fall of Rome, getting into the Middle Ages, and Islam started during that time,” Pam Wood, seventh- and eight-grade social studies teacher, said. “We also cover the Crusades and through the Renaissance, where we cover the Protestant Revolution.”

Wood said the first two weeks of seventh-grade are spent in geography: one week on world geography and one week on Middle East geography. A few days are spent studying the Bedouins and Middle East trade before entering into the history of Islam.

“Islam is one of the things we do teach,” Grotting said. “Whenever we teach about any culture, we teach about religion. We are not promoting religion, it's just an informative piece.”

About the length of the unit, Grotting said the district is reevaluating how much time is spent on all particular topics in all subject areas to fully cover the state recommendations.

Typically, a unit will span from four to six weeks, and this year the Islam unit will be just over four, Wood said. The next unit will be the feudal system and Imperial Japan, Nyssa Middle School social studies teacher Jim Casad said.

“We try to be cognizant of parents' concerns. At times we will have alternative assignments for some students,” he said. “I believe we're not here to promote or advocate either religion or politics, however, we do have an obligation to inform students of what is going on in our world today and how history and culture have affected that world.”

'Five pillars of Islam' taught in public school
'Education practice wouldn't last 10 seconds if kids told to dress as priests'

Another school has been "teaching" Islam by having students study and learn Muslim prayers and dress as Muslims, and a lawyer who argued a previous dispute over this issue to the U.S. Supreme Court said such methodologies wouldn't "last 10 seconds" if it were Christianity being taught.
"Would it have been 'just cultural education' if students were in simulated baptisms, wearing a crucifix, having taken the name of St. John and with praise banners saying 'Praise be to Jesus Christ' on classroom walls?" asked Edward White III, of the Thomas More Law Center.

His comments came after a new protest arose in Nyssa, Ore., where one parent raised objections when the Islamic teachings came to light. The district there, according to Supt. Don Grotting, is teaching a chapter in a history textbook "Journey Across Time" that talks about "how civilization has developed and some of the particular aspects of Islam."

"We teach out of the book, and there are some supplemental class activities," he told WND. "The kids do some skits, they could bring a food from the region, you could build a prop that would have depicted (something) maybe during that time period.

"If you wanted to you could dress up (as a Muslim) for extra credit," he said.

He said students also learned about the climate of the Middle East, the food and everyday activities of Islam, and the geography and the lay of the land.

Still another assignment was to learn the "five pillars" of Islam, study Ramadan and listen to guest speakers including an American Muslim who arrived dressed in her religious costume to talk to the kids about her Quran.

"She relayed to the kids, if you're a Christian you have your Bible, this is our Quran," Grotting said.

Parent Kendalee Garner, however, objected to having her son being taught Islam and also to the time the public school system spends on the subject.

She told WND that her 13-year-old son is being "indoctrinated that Islam is a religion of peace, and being dressed up as a Muslim, being taught prayers, and scriptures out of the Quran."

"I just don't understand the ban on Christianity but Islam has free rein," she said.

She said the guest speakers and skits and reports were wrong, but what set her off was a class in which students in all three social studies classes dressed in traditional Islamic outfits.
"The only reason I knew about it was because my son told me about it," she said. "They sent him to the library instead of stopping what they were doing. I'm sure people would be outraged if they dressed up as the pope."

That was White's point exactly.

If that's how teaching about religions is done, he said, "then teach all religions in the same way, Christianity, Judaism. Have the kids study Native American religions, do the dance, smoke the pipe. Have the kids dress up as priests and hear confession."

He said when he suggests that, school managers and even judges get that "panic-stricken" look.
He knows because he argued the same dispute up to the U.S. Supreme Court after complaints of similar teachings in the Byron Union School District in California.

As WND has reported that case was almost a duplicate. Teachers were having students memorize Islamic prayers, wear Islamic dress and learn to behave as a Muslim under the guise of studying history.

Some parents objected and their resulting lawsuit was turned back by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals where the opinion called it "cultural education."

The U.S. Supreme Court last week declined to intervene, but lawyers note that's not necessarily an endorsement of the court; it just means the justices will not review the dispute at this point.
White said he actually challenged the 9th Circuit to write its instructions in a detailed opinion, so schools would know exactly what's required. However, he said the court brushed him off with a three-paragraph ruling that essentially boils down to one district judge saying it's okay in one school district.

"Why is it okay to teach Islam? Unless there's an exception in the Establishment Clause, which says you cannot teach religion in schools unless it's Islam," he said. "I haven't seen it."

Grotting said the course has been taught for several years, and comes mandated by the state under a set of required standards – called Benchmark 3 – that students must reach each year.
Grotting acknowledged to WND that textbooks do "take a slant" on some issues, because publishers "are wanting to sell a textbook that is meeting the needs of the state and federal mandates."

"I believe we're not here to promote or advocate either religion or politics," social studies teacher Jim Casad told the Ontario, Ore., Argus Observer. "However, we do have an obligation to inform students of what is going on in our world today and how history and culture have affected that world."
In the California case, school officials also blamed the "possible cant" of the textbook and said the Islamic studies were being taught because of state mandates.

"It is imperative that our instruction includes an understanding of and insight into all cultures and a tolerance for the diversity found in the world," said Peggy Green, the Byron Union School District superintendent, at that time.

A review online of information from the text shows that it teaches Christianity spread because "it gave meaning to peoples' lives, appealed to their emotions and promised happiness after death."
Its description also focuses on Christians' conflicts with Rome (when they were fed to lions), and splits between Christians following Roman teachings and those following the teachings of Constantine.

However, the article praises how the Muslims founded the system for banking, created important centers for learning, government and the arts, how they ran "government, society and business" and made valuable contributions in math, science and the arts.

The text also credits Muslims with inventing algebra and chemistry as well as creating beautiful buildings, citing the Taj Mahal, although the text does not mention that that is a tomb.

There's also no mention of the Quranic instruction that Muslims must behead infidels, or nonbelievers.

One blogger said Christians should think strategically on such issues.

"Cases like this present Christians with a golden opportunity to introduce elements of religious teaching back into the state curriculum by using the left's double standard towards Islam against it," said one commentator. The Institute for Christian-Muslim Understanding is hosting a potluck dinner and lecture entitled “Jesus and Mary: Christian and Muslim Perspectives” at St. Mary’s Academy on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006.

Speakers will be Holy Names Sister Mollie Reavis and Aseel Nasir-Dyck. The event is free and open to the public. Those attending the 6:30 p.m. potluck are asked to bring a pork-free dish for six.

Muslim sunset prayer will be at 7:30 p.m. followed by the lecture at 7:45 pm.
The institute was founded four years ago.

February 22, 2005 - New York - The American Jewish Committee today urged school districts across the nation to follow the lead of the Anchorage, Alaska School Board in banning the Arab World Studies Notebook as a resource on the Middle East for public school teachers.

"The Anchorage School Board action corresponds with the findings of our own study that this publication is inappropriate for American public schools," said AJC Executive Director David A. Harris. The Anchorage School Board voted unanimously this month to ban the Notebook.

The AJC study, Propaganda, Proselytizing and Public Education:
A Critique of the Arab World Studies Notebook, concludes that it "appears largely designed to advance the anti-Israel and propagandistic views of the Notebook's sponsors, the Middle East Policy Council and the Arab World and Islamic Resources (AWAIR), to an audience of teachers who may not have the resources to assess the text critically."

"Educating American children about the Middle East and about different religions and cultures is vitally important, but the Notebook is precisely the wrong way to go about it," Harris said.
The Notebook "fails to meet the standards we have come to expect of material used to educate our children at American public schools," states the AJC report.

The outdated Notebook - it was last revised in 1998 - is replete with factual errors, inaccuracies and misrepresentations about Middle East history. Moreover, the lack of citation makes reference-checking virtually impossible.

"Most disturbingly, for a public school setting, the Notebook frequently steps over the line from teaching about religion to teaching religion itself, as when it suggests that students repeat Arabic phrases that are confessions of belief and proposes that Muslim faith statements be transmitted to others," concludes the AJC report.

"These lessons are less teaching about the Muslim religion than they are proselytizing for it."

The Notebook's skewed account of Middle East history and the Arab-Israeli conflict consistently distorts well-established facts and uses polemical, one-sided language, states the AJC analysis. "It by no means offers the kind of 'even-handed' approach to conflict situations that one would expect of American social studies curricular materials."

Further, without any foundation, the Notebook denies any Jewish connection to Jerusalem, a tactic used by extremists in the Muslim world to undermine Israel's legitimacy. It is not clear how many schools in North America currently are using the Notebook, but its promoters claim that over 12,000 copies have been distributed and over 16,000 educators have attended workshops in which it is being used.

Textbook on Arabs Removes Blunder

An Indian tribe has forced distributors of an Arab studies guide for U.S. teachers to remove an inaccurate passage that says Muslim explorers preceded Christopher Columbus to North America and became Algonquin chiefs.

Peter DiGangi, director of Canada's Algonquin Nation Secretariat in Quebec, called claims in the book, the "Arab World Studies Notebook," "preposterous" and "outlandish," saying nothing in the tribe's written or oral history support them. The 540-page book says the Muslim explorers married into the Algonquin tribe, resulting in 17th-century tribal chiefs named Abdul-Rahim and Abdallah Ibn Malik.

Mr. DiGangi said the guide's author and editor, Audrey Shabbas, and the Middle East Policy Council (MEPC), a Washington advocacy group that promoted the curriculum to school districts in 155 U.S. cities, have been unresponsive to his concerns since November. But Ms. Shabbas said this week the passage was removed immediately from subsequent copies, and that she was "giving careful and thoughtful attention" on how to notify the 1,200 teachers who have been given copies of the book in the past five years.

"As the editor of the 'Notebook,' when I heard from Mr. DiGangi that a citation in the work was not borne out by either Native American written records or by oral traditions, I was grateful that the statement could so easily be removed," she said.

She did not explain how the false information got into the curriculum.

"There was no [scholarly] peer review," said Mr. DiGangi, who says he was never contacted after lodging his complaint. "It was so outlandish. It never should have gone to press."

Jon Roth, MEPC's program manager, yesterday said the group has decided to remove the two-page chapter called "Early Muslim Exploration Worldwide: Evidence of Muslims in the New World Before Columbus."

"It is not, nor has it ever been, our intention to spread lies or untruths," Mr. Roth said.

Meanwhile, the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation this week issued a report that is critical of "Arab World Studies Notebook." The study, titled "The Stealth Curriculum: Manipulating America's History Teachers," reviewed many curriculum supplements and "professional development" programs aimed at schoolteachers. { SEE BELOW for link } "It appeared that the creation and dissemination of these materials, often through professional development institutes and [teacher] in-service programs, had fallen into the eager hands of interest groups and ideologues yearning to use America's public school classrooms to shape the minds of tomorrow's citizens by manipulating what today's teachers are introducing into the lessons of today's children," the Fordham study concluded.

Mr. Roth said the "Arab World Studies Notebook" is the primary reference text used in the council's program of teacher workshops conducted by Ms. Shabbas, which have numbered more than 268 in 155 cities since 1987. The book, offered at a markdown of $15 from $49.95, has 90 readings and lesson plans covering the history and culture of the Arab world, the broader Middle East and Islam worldwide. "A lot of teachers use it," Mr. Roth said. Chester E. Finn Jr., Fordham Foundation president, said the new "cottage industry" of "predigested supplemental materials" and professional development for history and social studies teachers was intended to help teachers who had little or no background in certain areas, and because textbooks are often insufficient.

"How could we expect them to handle complicated and emotionally charged subjects like the Holocaust and figure out what lessons to learn about it? To escort youngsters safely through the thicket of political correctness and ethnic politics that now surrounds such benign holidays as Columbus Day and Thanksgiving?" he asks in the preface of the foundation's report.

The void in teachers' knowledge and instructional materials has been filled by publishers, universities, research groups and think tanks, advocacy groups, cable networks, film producers and itinerant teacher trainers, Mr. Finn said. "We know staggeringly little about how good these materials and workshops are -- how accurate they are, whether the information they present is balanced and accurate. We know even less about the efficacy, value or intellectual integrity of innumerable workshops, institutes and training programs in which teachers participate," he said.

The report, written by Sandra Stotsky, former senior associate commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Education, described the "Arab World Studies Notebook" as "propaganda."

The chapter written by Ms. Shabbas and Abdallah Hakim Quick claims that Muslims from Europe were the first to sail across the Atlantic and land in the New World, starting in 889, the report says. "The idea that English explorers met native Indian chiefs with Muslim names in the middle of the Northeast woodlands sounds almost like something a Hollywood film writer dreamed up for a spoof," the report says.

The current 1998 edition of the "Notebook" has "no evidence or documentation to support key historical 'facts' that serve to advance their political views or religious beliefs," the report says. "One can only wonder if this has ever been questioned by the teachers who use its materials, or if they feel they must agree to any claim made by Muslims as an 'alternative perspective' or risk being labeled insensitive, Eurocentric, or racist."

Shabbas's dupes learn from the Notebook that the Koran condemns wars of "territorical [sic] conquest" -- and they also learn that, from the 8th to the 13th centuries, Arabian Muslims built a great empire that "extended across North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia, from Spain to the borders of China." Does this mean that those Arabian Muslims spurned the Koran? Does it mean that they assembled their empire without fighting wars of conquest? Exactly how did they do that? You may well ask the questions, but you won't find any answers in the Notebook.

The Stealth Curriculum: Manipulating America's History Teachers

An excerpt from PART I: SUPPLEMENTAL CURRICULUM

Islam and Islamic History

The traditional history curriculum has been faulted for concentrating almost solely on the history
of the Western world—ancient Greece and Rome, and European, British, and U.S. history. To help American students become more familiar with other cultures, civilizations, and regions, and thus less “ethnocentric,” history teachers, who tend to have been trained chiefly in Western or U.S. history and whose textbooks often have a similar focus, have had to draw upon additional resources. This is especially the case for addressing Islam, the Islamic world, and the Middle East. I describe here three egregious sets of curricular materials. All three falsify history in their attempt to indoctrinate both teachers and students.

The Arab World Studies Notebook

The Arab World Studies Notebook is published jointly by the Middle East Policy Council and
AWAIR (Arab World And Islamic Resources and School Services). The Middle East Policy Council (formerly the Arab American Affairs Council) sponsors workshops about the Arab world and Islam for teachers, while AWAIR runs the workshops and distributes printed materials and videos. The Notebook is described as containing secondary level curriculum materials.

The workshops are provided free to schools all over the country, and the Notebooks cost much less money per teacher ($15) when schools arrange for the workshops than when teachers buy copies on their own (over $50). The Notebook has been used in schools for many years and is in every bibliography on Islam that I’ve seen for educators. It is specifically touted for staff development by a faculty member at Teachers College, Columbia University in a 1999 ERIC Digest article on “the resources available to provide Arab Americans with a supportive school environment and all students with an accurate and unbiased education on the Middle East.”10 (It was also a major resource for a professional development institute described in the second part of this report.)

I first came across the Notebook in 1990 when parents and other citizens belonging to an organization we called Citizens for Quality Education were engaged in a high profile battle with social studies administrators and teachers at Brookline (MA) High School over the content of a course called “World in Crisis” and their attempt to eliminate Advanced Placement European History.11 The Notebook was one of the pieces of propaganda we found in half a dozen courses at the high school. Published in Berkeley, California, and edited by Audrey Shabbas, who is still its editor, as well as director of AWAIR, the 1989 version (about 300 pages long) stated among other non-facts that Yasir Arafat was president of a newly declared State of Palestine, that the United Nations General Assembly had voted to recognize this state in 1988, and that the Canaanites were the ancestors of many present-day Palestinians.12 I will paraphrase or quote briefly from William Bennetta’s preliminary report and correspondence on the content of the current version of the Notebook.

Bennetta concluded that the principal purpose of the 1998 Notebook (now 513 pages long) is to
induce teachers to embrace Islamic religious beliefs, support political views favored by MEPC and AWAIR, and disseminate those religious beliefs and political views in their classrooms. Its attempt at indoctrination goes beyond presenting religious myths as matters of fact, and it also includes some bizarre history. For example, one article, ascribed to Abdallah Hakim Quick and Audrey Shabbas, is titled “Early Muslim Exploration Worldwide: Evidence of Muslims in the New World Before Columbus.” The article claims that Muslims from Europe were the first to sail across the Atlantic and land in the New World, starting in 889. Not to be outdone by any of the early European explorers, the article also claims that West African Muslims had not only spread throughout South and Central America but had also reached Canada, intermarrying with the Iroquois and Algonquin nations so that, much later, early English explorers were to meet “Iroquois and Algonquin chiefs with names like Abdul-Rahim and Abdallah Ibn Malik.”

spoof. What is most astonishing about this “historical information” is that it seems not to have been recognized as fake history by all the satisfied teachers that MEPC claims have participated in its workshops over the years. At least no complaints have reached local newspapers or state departments of education, so far as it can be determined. The current version of the Notebook continues the practice that CQE noted in 1990—no evidence or documentation to support key historical “facts” that serve to advance their political views or religious beliefs. One can only wonder if this has ever been questioned by the teachers who use its materials, or if they feel they must agree to any claim made by Muslims as an “alternative perspective” or risk being labeled insensitive, Eurocentric, or racist.

Interestingly, this particular bit of fake history may soon be cleaned up at the request of the
Algonquin Nation itself. In 2003, the Algonquin Nation Secretariat, in Quebec, became aware of the academic travesty being committed in its name (i.e., English explorers meeting Algonquin chiefs with Muslim names) and issued an alert on November 28, 2003, “to state that there is no credible evidence to support these theories, in the archival record, academic study, or in oral history” and that “we are extremely concerned that such nonsense would be circulated as curriculum intended for use in schools.”13 The Secretariat calls upon the sponsors of the Arab World Studies Notebook to render an “explanation and an apology” for “material that is so patently untrue and academically indefensible.”

Supplementary Text on Arab World Elicits Criticism

Education officials in Anchorage, Alaska, have prohibited teachers from using a guide to teaching about the Arab world—the same guide that a national Jewish advocacy organization is now urging districts across the country to ban.

While Anchorage officials cited inaccuracies in the materials, the American Jewish Committee claims the guide also contains anti-Semitic messages.

The “Arab World Studies Notebook” is produced by Arab World and Islamic Resources, a Berkeley, Calif.-based publisher of supplementary instructional materials. The 540-page ringed binder provides historical summaries, religious and cultural information, primary documents, lesson plans, and recommended readings that promote “the Arab’s point of view,” according to Audrey Shabbas, the editor of the guide.
Ms. Shabbas has led workshops around the country—including in Anchorage—to help teachers incorporate the information in their classes. She said the guide has a disclaimer stating that it represents one point of view, and an advisory to teachers to balance the information with perspectives from Jewish organizations and other history texts.

“In this notebook, they are only being given the Arab viewpoint,” said Ms. Shabbas. “The first thing students have to do is get all those [other] viewpoints.”

Whose Agenda?

The 50,000-student Anchorage district took action last month after a review committee found that while information on Arab art, music, and literature was of high quality, “a substantial amount of historical, political, and content-area information in the notebook was determined to be inaccurate,” according to district documents.

A recent review of the guide by the American Jewish Committee, a New York City-based organization that works “to safeguard the welfare and security of Jews” around the world, described the guide as “propaganda.”

“The ‘Arab World Studies Notebook,’ attempting to redress a perceived deficit in sympathetic views of the Arabs and Muslim religion in the American classroom, veers … toward historical distortion as well as uncritical praise, whitewashing, and practically proselytizing,” says the critique, “Propaganda, Proselytizing, and Public Education.”

The report argues that the text whitewashes the problems of Islamic extremism, presents religious beliefs as facts, and implies that Islam is superior to Judaism and Christianity.

Ms. Shabbas said the guide represents the diversity of the Arab world, including information on the various languages spoken, as well as the various forms of religion practiced in the region.

First published in 1990 and last revised in 1998, the guide is the primary reference for workshops sponsored by the Middle East Policy Council, a moderate Washington-based organization that works to promote discussion and understanding of U.S. policies in the Middle East. The workshops have been presented to more than 16,000 teachers in 43 states, according to the council.

A small section of the guide that outlined research showing Muslims’ pre-Columbian presence in North America was removed several years ago after the Algonquin tribe in Canada disputed the claim.
Critics, Ms. Shabbas said, simply have opposing viewpoints.

“I suspect the overarching thing is that this notebook and teacher workshops are dispelling the negative stereotypes about Arabs and of Muslims,” she said, “and that probably doesn’t fit [critics’] agenda.”

BEWARE THE ARAB WORLD STUDIES NOTEBOOK - a textbook for U.S. teachers in middle and high schools

Since learning about the "interfaith" event at St. Mary's Academy - at which Muslim propagandist Aseel Nasir-Dyck was invited to speak and pray - I haven't had much peace of mind.

To be clear, I'm not accusing St. Mary's or The Sentinel or the Archdiocese of anti-Semitism. Perhaps they are all unaware of the controversy; they may simply need somebody to inform them. It would be helpful to see ads promoting Jewish-Christian interfaith dialogue in The Sentinel

Anti-Semitism in American Schools and Academia

It is shocking. I never thought I'd live to see the day American schools would turn on Israel and Jewish people. But it is happening. Thanks to culture warriors David Horowitz and his team at FrontPageMag.com - including newly added Robert Spencer - I've uncovered more information for you.

Britain . . . insists that the Middle East conflict is a dispute about land. Partly, this is because the empirical, rational British are incapable of understanding the hysteria and paranoia unleashed by religious fanaticism. They think that the only thing that could drive someone to the inhuman act of suicide bombing is the despair and rage caused by oppression.

. . . they cannot see that Israel is actually the front line of defense in the war that has been declared upon the United States and the United Kingdom, and that buses are being blown up in Jerusalem for exactly the same reason that Tube trains were blown up in London, and the Twin Towers and the Pentagon were hit in New York and Washington.

Instead, they blame Jerusalem and Washington for the atrocities of London. While they loathe and fear Islamist extremism, they accuse the Jews of provoking it.----Chapter Six: Scapegoating the Jews

This book is a warning to the United States and I highly recommend it.

Phillips has good news about what she called the "counteroffensive" in the U.S.

The grip of the left-wing intelligentsia has been loosened by the growth of conservative think tanks and publishing houses, talk radio and now the internet bloggers.

In Britain, by contrast, there has been no equivalent institutional challenge to the hegemony [dominance] of the left and its stranglehold on the universities, media, civil service and other key institutions. In the United States, at least there are wars over culture; in Britain, there has been a rout.

Warning about multiculturalism

The Saudis are at it again, and this time America's school children are the victims. It's no secret that the princes in Riyadh fund anti-American, anti-Israel, and anti-Semitic propaganda in mosques and madrassas across the globe. But now a yearlong investigation by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency [JTA] exposes that the oil kingdom's virulent tentacles also stretch into America's public school system.

The JTA says textbooks used in public schools across the country "are highly critical of democratic institutions and forgiving of repressive ones." The books also "praise and sometimes promote Islam, but criticize Judaism and Christianity and are filled with false assertions."

One such book is the "Arab World Studies Notebook." The JTA reports that it suggests that Jews have "undue influence on U.S. foreign policy" and that its country section omits any information on Israel and only refers to "Palestine." The book writes that the Koran "synthesizes and perfects earlier revelations," namely Jewish and Christian. According to the JTA the two organizations behind the book - the Arab World and Islamic Resources [AWAIR] and the Middle East Policy Council [MPEC] - receive funding from Saudi Arabia: AWAIR from the state-owned Saudi Aramco oil company and MPEC directly from Riyadh. According to MPEC's Web site it has "conducted Workshops in 175 different cities in 43 states," which "more than 16,000 educators have attended."
